TOPICS OF STUDY

We continue to work on grace and  courtesy in the classroom.  We have also been working on an anti-bullying curriculum which teaches children about their feelings, how their feelings change and how to handle these feelings.

Biology

We are beginning a study of birds:  learning about their characteristics,  habitats, and types of beaks and feet.

Geography

We have been studying land and water forms this month.  We have already covered lake, island and peninsula.  We will continue with:  gulf, cape, bay, isthmus, strait, archipelago, and system of lakes.  The children are pouring water in the forms and matching picture and definition cards for the landforms.  Some of the children are making a land and water form book with a page for each form that has the illustration and definition.

Math

Calendar math:

  • we count each school day with paper clips, stickers, and a sticky notes
  • we graph the weather daily
  • we discuss yesterday, today and tomorrow
  • we practice patterning as we add a  colored shape to our calendar each day
  • we learn the days of the week and months of the year
  • we practice telling time to the hour and half hour
  • we are learning to identify the penny, nickel, and dime and learn their values.  We also count money each day.

Other math activities are specialized depending on individual needs.  Most of the class has started addition.  Many are also working on multiplication and subtraction.

Language

We do group rhyming activities.  The children love to sing the song "Down By the Bay".  They take turns adding a rhyming line to end the verse.  Ask your child about this, and have them sing it for you.

We have seen some great writing during our focus on Narrative Writing.  We will continue that type of writing through April.

Other Language activities are specialized depending on individual needs.
